Firefighting guide
Former Karachi Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal had added three snorkels to the fire department. Afterwards no more snorkels were added. Karachi should also have a Rescue 1122 service so that any incident of fire can easily be handled. The harrowing fire incident in a garment factory in Baldia Town was an eye-opener for all of us.
On average three to four fire incidents take place every day in Karachi. It is suggested that fire drills should be carried out frequently to ascertain the effectiveness of the city’s firefighting equipment. The other important aspect of firefighting is to train fire-fighters according to the latest techniques. There is a strong need to chalk a Firefighting Guide Book in which procedures are described regarding how to fight all types of fires. The government should also give financial incentives and bonuses to firefighters for their good work.
