Literate democracy

By our correspondents

It was enlightenment and awareness of fundamental rights that resulted in the spread of democracy through every nook and corner of the world. Democracy needs literacy. Although Pakistan is a democratic country, it has failed to reap the fruits of true democracy because of the poor literacy rate in the country.

Today, illiteracy is thought to be the main cause behind the present economic, social and political problem of the country. We lag behind almost all important counties of the region in the field of education. However, it is also not out of place to confess that the absence of political stability gives ways to lawlessness, anarchy and turmoil, which eventually pushes the country towards disintegration. Only through education can we avoid such catastrophic phenomena. Therefore to cultivate democratic values, we should increase our literacy rates.
