LAHORE
The government should call All Parties Conference (APC) to resolve economic, social and political issues besides evolving a strategy to overcome the crises.
These views were expressed by the speakers at Jang Economic Session on ‘Population Growth - Social and Economic Problems’. The speakers were Sarfraz Kazmi, Abdul Basit Khan, Abdul Khaliq, Afzal Khayal, Aima Mehmood and Dr Aysha Azam and the session was hosted by Sikindar Lodhi.
Sarfraz Kazmi said economic, social and political problems were increasing with the growth of population. If the population growth is not stopped, it will double by next 25 years, he said and added human resources should involve in productivity to have access to basic facilities. He said every year 25,000 mothers die in Pakistan during child birth due to early marriages.
Abdul Basit Khan said population growth was alarming which was not only the problem of Pakistan, but also a global issue. He said due to inconsistent government policies, family planning was not implemented. He said lawlessness, terrorism and extremism were the result of population growth. He stressed the need for family planning to resolve issues.
Abdul Khaliq said overpopulation badly affected society, cultural and economy while education was a basic thing to bring Pakistan out of crisis. He stressed to adopt technical and vocational education for progress. He said human resources could change fate of a nation.
Afzal Khayal said rapid population growth became a serious problem for Pakistan because growing population had eaten up resources and increased problems. He said the government should evolve proper planning to increase resources for the masses.
He said youths could play a vital role in the progress of the country. He said the government should evolve an effective policy to use the youths positively.
Aima Mehmood said if the government properly utilised the population, this population would become an asset for the country. She called for changing the mindset to resolve issues. She said women were adversely affected due to population growth and limited resources. Better results could be acquired by educating women and providing them with health facilities.
Dr Aysha Azam said women should be empowered to resolve economic and social issues. She said poverty and population growth became global issues. She said investment should be made in women health and welfare.
