An anti-terrorism court accepted on Tuesday a charge-sheet against five alleged agents of Indian spy agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW).
Investigation officer Sohail Khan, who submitted the charge-sheet against Abdul Jabbar alias Zafar Tension, Mohsin Khan alias Kashif, Shafiq alias Pappu, Khalid Aman alias Anna and Adil Ansari, told the court that the five men were training by RAW and involved in carrying out a series of bombings in Karachi’s Orangi Town in July 2008.
At least 50 people, including law enforcers, were wounded in six low-intensity bomb blasts.
The charge sheet also showed two men, Muhammad Anwar and Mehmood Siddiqui, as absconders in the case.
It was also submitted in the charge-sheet that these men funded by RAW. The funds were transferred to their bank accounts from a neighbouring country.
Four of the five men were arrested by the counter-terrorism department, which had announced their arrest on August 27. SSP Naveed Khawaja had told reporters that these men were had received militant training in various cities of India between 1995 and 2002 including Basant Pur, Dehradun, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, and Farid Pur.
He said the terrorists were operating a network in India, South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai.
The next day they were produced before ATC-I judge Bashir Ahmed Khoso and the court was told that the five men were involved in anti-state activities including targeted killings, bomb blasts and other activities in Karachi meant to create unrest.
The police said illegal arms and other material seized from the these men suggested that they, in collusion with their absconding accomplices Javed Langra and Rais Mama, were planning to carry out a major terror attack in Karachi during Muharram.
They added that the five men were members of a political party and their absconding accomplices were planning to murder Afaq Ahmed, the chief of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement–Haqiqi.
One of them, Muhammad Shafiq Khan alias Pappu, was an employee of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board.
Adil Ansari was arrested on September 22 by the counter-terrorism department. He was an employee of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.
