In a meeting presided over by the Sindh chief minister on Tuesday, religious scholars and Ulema of different schools of thought pledged to respect the sanctity of Muharram and demonstrate religious harmony and brotherhood throughout the month.
Though the meeting participants highlighted the brotherly ties among all Muslims, they also expressed apprehensions that outside elements might be looking to take advantage of the security situation and attempt to sabotage the efforts for peace and safety.
Addressing the meeting, CM Qaim Ali Shah reiterated the importance of protecting the safety and rights of individuals. "As per the code of conduct, no one will be allowed to deliver any sort of hate speeches or distribute objectionable material. Anyone who violates these laws will face a trial in the ATCs. Our laws are non-discriminative and all stakeholders are urged to follow these laws in letter and spirit."
"It remains our duty to maintain law and order from the 1st of Muharram right up till Chehlum. We intend to fulfill our duty but we will need the full cooperation of all religious scholars and schools of thoughts."
The CM reiterated that his government held nothing against madrasas providing Islamic education. "However, those who are turning our children into terrorists cannot belong to any religion; they are simply enemies of all humanity."
Shah added that the registration of seminaries was only being done to bring all madrasas under the government's security net. He told the meeting participants to forward requests for compensation for martyrs and asked the Ulemas to provide a copy of FIRs and other relevant evidence of martyrs to the DIGP concerned.
The CM also announced a public holiday on the 1st of Muharram on account of Yaum-e-Shahadat Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA) in Karachi.
