Approximately 2.2 million children would be administered oral polio vaccine (OPV) in two phases, under the ongoing National Immunisation Drive, from September 7 till September 14, informed a Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) official on Tuesday.
The first phase, covering districts West, Malir and South, would commence from September 7 and go on till September 10. Districts East, Korangi and Central would be covered in the second phase, starting September 11 and ending September 14, the official stated.
Immunisation drive in the remaining 23 districts of the interior of Sindh would start from September 14 till September 17 and around six million children would be administered the vaccine.
Referring to a query with respect to Injectable Polio Vaccine (IPV), the official claimed that it would only be administered to those visiting centres set up under the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) as well as those residing in high-risk union councils of Karachi, the rest would be administered the OPV.
Vitamin-A was also announced to be administered province-wide, to 7 million children aged between six to 59 months age, the official further informed.
Police and Rangers personnel were said to be providing security to polio vaccinators and health workers during the immunisation campaign.
