MUZAFFARGARH: The Irrigation Department on Saturday issued a flood warning after recent rains in the Muzaffargarh district.
A middle-level flood is expected in Chenab and Ravi rivers between July 7 and 9.
The authorities feared that 300 villages in Muzaffargarh district comprising tehsils Muzaffargarh, Alipur and Kot Addu would be affected by the expected flash floods during this year. The district administration has started preparations to fight recurring floods and disasters by taking effective measures to save maximum areas and people from the natural calamity.
Official sources said Muzaffargarh district has been divided in 30 sectors under the flood combating plan. Flood control officers have been deputed at the Flood Control Rooms, established in the DCO Office.
DCO Hafiz Shaukat Ali said the government was formulating tehsil-level flood disaster management committees in the district and appointing focal persons at tehsil level to keep a 24-hour vigilant eye on the flood situation in the coming days.
He said the district administration has started de-silting of Chenab river on emergency grounds to avert the recurring flood disasters. Rescue 1122 and civil defence department have started their special flood-fighting exercises. The joint important flood planning meetings of Pak Army, district administration, police, Rescue 1122, livestock, agriculture, health departments and TMAs are also being conducted on regular basis.
Banks of river Chenab, dykes have also been paved and repaired, besides identifying the spots for helipads to meet any emergency situation during rains and floods under a special aviation plan.
