We have just celebrated our 69th Independence Day. We spend much of our energy and time on celebrations but the real objective of having a separate country has faded away. Equipped with immense human and natural resources, we lag far behind other countries in the region. This should be a matter of serious concern for all of us. Unending social and economic issues and a deteriorating law and order situation have gripped the mind of every people. All these things call into question the objectives for which this country was achieved. Every successive government has failed terribly to yank the nation out of the mess it is in. It is a national tragedy that we still have to go a long way to become a nation. Our geostrategic location has rather added to our difficulties. A highly volatile neighbour, Afghanistan, and US’ vested interests have also made our country unstable. Resultantly, 69 years down the road, we are facing a number of serious national crises, including terrorism, linguistic and ethnic division.
While rejoicing the fruits of freedom, we have not yet been able to clutch the lofty principle of unity, faith and discipline, a magnificent icon of trust which was given to us by Quaid-e-Azam. Let us retrace our steps, rethink our thoughts and reconstruct our lives in the light of the principles our Quaid prescribed for us. It is in this, and this alone, that our salvation lies.
