Our leaders need to realise and recognise the importance of education. Only by investing in education can this nation arise. Education should be made mandatory by declaring a national emergency. The federal and provincial governments should reduce budget allocations for all other sectors to increase the budget for education from the current 2 percent to 7 percent of GDP.
A similar policy was executed in Malaysia by Mahathir Mahamed where 30 percent of the annual budget is allocated to education. It should be ensured that at least 25 percent of the federal and provincial education budgets for FY2015-16 are allocated to higher education in accordance with international standards. Our leaders should remember that without increasing the budget for education, it will be impossible to give this country 100 percent literacy.
