Excessive consumption of meat may cause ailment

Rawalpindi : It is a common practice rather should be said an enjoyment for majority of people to eat excessive quantity of meat not only on the three days of Eidul Azha but also for a whole week or so after Eid that according to health experts may be harmful for both healthy persons and chronic patients.

Health experts say that eating heavy and spicy meat dishes regularly on and after Eid for days may cause stomach related problems and other complications even in apparently healthy persons while may cause severe complications among chronic patients particularly suffering from heart diseases, hepatitis B and C and diabetes.

Experts believe that eating meat in moderate quantity on Eidul Azha does not cause any problems in healthy persons but the patients of diabetes whose kidneys are not working properly should not eat too much quantity of meat. Patients with compromised kidney function should eat only a little quantity of meat as consumption of meat on regular basis among these patients may cause serious complications that may lead to failure of kidneys.

The diabetics whose kidneys are working properly can eat meat dishes in moderate quantity like healthy persons as medically they are not advised not to eat meat dishes. However, according to health experts, regular use of meat dishes on the three days of Eidul Azha or for a whole week may cause problems even in healthy persons.

Experts say that the chronic patients suffering from hepatitis B and C are medically advised to eat only a little quantity of meat. The chronic patients of hepatitis B and C with ascites, accumulation of fluid in abdomen, or having history of blood vomiting can eat only up to 40 grams of meat in 24 hours. Experts warn that consumption of heavier quantity of meat may cause unconsciousness, blood vomiting or fits among chronic patients of hepatitis B and C. Experts say that if a patient suffering from hepatitis B or C found to be having irrelevant talk after eating meat, he or she should be taken to the healthcare facility immediately.

However, the patients of hepatitis B or C with normal functioning of liver and kidneys can have moderate quantity of meat but they should also avoid regular use of meat on Eid days and afterwards.

Experts say that people particularly those who have complaints of peptic or duodenal ulcer should also restrict themselves to use of limited quantity of meat. Experts also believe that use of heavy quantity of meat at one meal may cause health problems in all individuals including healthy ones and it must be avoided.
