LONDON: Awami National Party’s UK chapter has appealed to the Western countries to take notice of the campaign against them by Taliban militants in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
ANP’s UK President Mehfooz Jan told a press conference here that the secular party was bearing the brunt for “fighting against terrorists to secure the borders of Pakistan and facing militants on behalf of the whole of Pakistan” but “now we have been left on our own by the powerful quarters at the mercy of terrorists.”
The press conference was held in the wake of deadly attacks by Taliban groups on the party’s rallies since the election campaign got underway. The party’s election rallies have come under attack almost daily, forcing the party to cancel large scale rallies.
Mehfooz Jan called on the western countries to break their silence and ask Pakistan why “the liberal, secular and democratic forces all over Pakistan face threats while the right-wing parties have been given free reign to hold rallies, canvass while the same right is being denied to us through the use of terror tactics. We don’t have a level playing field. Isn’t it pre-poll rigging?”
