LAHORE:The decline in Lahore’s underground water has stopped and the judiciary has played an important role in this great achievement; this was stated by Wasa MD Syed Zahid Aziz and Vice-Chairman Sheikh Imtiaz Mahmood while addressing a press conference on Monday at Wasa head office.

MD Syed Zahid Aziz maintained that the judiciary gave us a lot of guidance which improved the ground water. The judiciary has played an important role, especially in water recycling projects, MD Wasa stated.

International organisations also appreciated Wasa efforts in stopping depletion of underground water, MD Wasa added. Vice-Chairman Sheikh Imtiaz said Wasa made several difficult decisions for which the agency was criticised. He further said those decisions brought fruitful results. “We worked for future generations,” said Vice Chairman Wasa adding the present government ended political interference in Wasa affairs. MD Wasa said that Wasa Lahore, with the support of the Punjab government, took several steps to save the underground water. “There is no precedent in the world for groundwater to be depleted and then improved,” MD Wasa claimed and added that if the situation continued as it was before, there was a danger of landslides in the city. He said many other problems will arise due to water scarcity. MD Wasa said that after 2018, rules were made to pay licenses and charges for tube wells. In the last three years, Wasa has stopped installing tube wells on political directions, he said.
