Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan said on Thursday that newly-built flyovers in Karachi and departments of public universities in the province will be named after Flying Officer Marium Mukhtiar, who became the first woman pilot of the Pakistan Air Force to be martyred.
The governor made the announcement when he visited the house of the martyred pilot to condole with the family.
Ebad also announced monuments will be built within the premises of public universities in memory of Flying Officer Mukhtar.
He said Mukhtiar had shown selfless courage and bravery in embracing martyrdom and had set a glowing example for young women of Pakistan. He said the entire nation was highly proud of the sacrifice rendered by Marium Mukhtiar.
Mukhtiar was martyred when a PAF training aircraft crashed in Kachha Gujrat, in the suburbs of Mianwali.
The PAF FT-7PG flown by Squadron Leader Saqib Abbasi and co-pilot Marium Mukhtiar was on a routine operational training mission when it encountered an in-flight emergency during the final stages of the mission, said a PAF statement issued after the tragic incident.
Marium is the first female PAF pilot to be martyred while on duty. The male officer, Abbasi, sustained minor injuries and a board of inquiry has been ordered by the Air Headquarters to determine the cause of the accident.
The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), General Raheel Sharif, while expressing condolences with the bereaved family had paid rich tributes to her valour and sacrifice. “She was indeed a role model for all women and a source of pride for Pakistan,” the COAS had said in his condolence message.
