On the directions of the Punjab Chief Minister, the city district government has directed the contractor to complete the entire of NUllah Leh Bridge at Liaquat Bagh by November 25.
Talking informally to ‘The News’ at his office, Commissioner Rawalpindi, Capt (r) Zahid Saeed told that the contractor has assured to complete the work on Nullah Leh Bridge by November 20, however, he has been directed to get it completed by 25th of the current month.
The delay in completion of work on this project is resulting in traffic jams on both sides of Murree road i.e. from Committee Chowk to Mareer Chowk besides Tipu Road.
The commissioner replying to a question told that after completion of work on bridge at Liaquat Bagh the issue of traffic jams from Committee Chowk to Mareer Chowk and Tipu Road would be resolved.
At present, work on carpeting of road from Moti Mahal Chowk to Mareer Chowk is in progress. Due to rains and change in design of bridge resulted in delay of meeting the schedule deadlines.
Since initiating work on it, the related bodies and authorities have failed to meet deadlines several times. On occasions of Eids and other public holidays, the labourers went on leave for an extended period. They are dealt by the contractor who pay them emoluments on daily basis. As the labourers working on any project do not work under the charge of government and are hired privately so they are not bound to join their duties on time.
However, after conclusion of work on bridge, signal lights would be restored at Mareer Chowk and other points as well and the problem of traffic snarls being witnessed at road linking Mareer Chowk with the Kutcheri Road would end automatically .
While the work on underpass would continue which is likely to take another three to four months to complete.
