In a third incident to have occurred within five days, around 24 huts were completely burnt down in a mysterious fire in Madina Colony, Federal B Industrial Area, during early hours of Tuesday. However, no casualties or injuries were reported.
According to fire station officials, the settlements mostly occupied by beggars, caught fire at around 2:10 am in the night. It took three fire engines an hour and a half to put the fire out, managing to save around 400 more hutments set up nearby in time, the official added.
A child and an elderly woman were among five to have been burnt alive, while two others were injured, as separate fires erupted in two shanty settlements in Block 2 and Block 8 of Gulistan-e-Jauhar on October 29.
According to police officials, a total of 49 thatched huts were burnt to the ground and more than 180 people were rendered homeless, however, the cause of the blazes remained unknown to this date.
Ironically, the casualties occurred in the smaller fire which erupted at around 3:45pm in an illegal settlement situated near Kamran Chowrangi in Block 2 of Gulistan-e-Jauhar.
Around eight thatched huts were destroyed in which 20-year-old Minhas, 15-year-old Rabia, 12-year-old Sarfaraz, Mohsin, 8, and Shahida, 100, were burnt alive. Another teenager Alishba was injured as she was buried under the rubble.
According to the police, the settlement was largely inhabited by beggars and around 30 of them were rendered homeless.
