LONDON: Senior Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Mohammed Anwar has denied ever being involved in money-laundering.
Talking to The News outside the Belgravia Police Station where he had arrived to answer his bail in the high profile money laundering investigation, Anwar said that he had not done anything wrong and the police had the right to investigate any suspicious activity. “We have provided every answer to the questions asked by the police. We have fully cooperated with the police so far and provided them everything they asked for. It’s not right that myself or the MQM have ever been involved in money laundering. We are hopeful that we will come out as winner when the investigation is completed,” Anwar asserted.
He complained, “Pakistani media has hyped things up and have said lots of baseless things. In the end it’s a police investigation and the police will take action on the basis of evidence. Media has taken a very negative role in our case and facts have been distorted in many cases”.
He had arrived at the police station with MQM Rabita Committee member Imbisat Mallick and his legal counsel. Anwar remained inside the police station for about two hours and then emerged to announce that his bail had been extended on the same terms until a date in February 2016. Altaf Hussain’s bail was extended on Monday till late February next year.
When asked if he had given interview to the police or not, Anwar replied that he took advice from his legal team on what was the best legal option.
The News understands that Muhammad Anwar didn’t answer questions asked by the police and went for the “no option.”
He said that the MQM would defend itself if charges were brought against the party at any stage.
Anwar was originally arrested in London in early April 2015 this year. He is one of the most influential party leaders who had led the party at various international forums.
He has advised the MQM founder and leader on international affairs for a long time.
He was recently accused in sections of Pakistani media of being an “Indian national” but Muhammad Anwar held a press conference recently and produced proof that he was a Pakistani national and his forefathers had played a role in the creation of Pakistan.
