Marking the 22nd anniversary of the nuclear explosions carried out by Pakistan in response to Indian nuclear tests in 1998, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's (PML-N) Sindh chapter organised several events across the province with simplicity and enthusiasm on Thursday.

The main purpose of marking the day was to pay tribute to all scientists and engineers who worked under the leadership of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and played a historic role in making the country’s defence impervious to aggression, said Khwaja Tariq Nazeer, a PML-N Sindh leader.

However, this year, the party leadership has decided to mark Yaum-e-Takbeer with simplicity because of the coronavirus spread and the Pakistan International Airline plane crash, he said. The PML-N’s provincial leaders in their messages said that it was a matter of pride for the nation that they were celebrating the 22th anniversary of Yaum-e-Takbeer this year.

PML-N Sindh president Shah Muhammad Shah and secretary general Miftah Ismail said that May 28 was an historic day for the country when then prime minister and PML-N supmreo Sharif rattled India’s aggressive moves of conducing five nuclear tests by conducting six nuclear tests in response and declaring Pakistan an atomic power despite extreme foreign pressure.

“Former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had initiated the nuclear programme in the country and Sharif has completed it by making Pakistan a nuclear power bravely,” they said. They said the tests not only spoiled the dreams of India but also made Pakistan invincible.

Nazeer said that the party’s Sindh leadership had instructed the divisional and district organisations to celebrate the day with simplicity by cutting cakes and offer special prayers for progress, peace and prosperity of the country.

“The PMLN has the distinction of making the decision to carry out nuclear tests at Chaghi during the second tenure of Sharif as the country’s prime minister on May 28, 1998, following the Indian nuclear tests and has made Pakistan defense impregnable,” he told The News.
