The counter-terrorism department of CRHQ has busted a gang of extortionists and arrested two key members of the outfit, sources in the counter-terrorism department told ‘The News’.
“Our office received information that a group of extortionists was active in Islamabad. On September 6, a prominent physician, Dr. Iftikhar, head of medicine at the Federal Government Polyclinic, received a 'threat letter' with a 9mm bullet, asking him to pay Rs500,000 or face death. The doctor quietly paid the money by placing it at a pre-determined location. On last Friday (October 2), a similar letter with a bullet was received by a well-known gynaecologist, Dr. Shahnaz Wajid, and her husband, Dr. Wajid, former head of radiology at the Federal Government Polyclinic," said sources.
The counter-terrorism department was already working on the case. On Monday at 8 p.m., a team arrested two members of the gang who had arrived to receive the extortion money of Rs500,000 in accordance with the plan set by the counter-terrorism team members. They tricked the extortionists to come and receive the money and assumed positions under proper cover around the point of collection of money near Shaheed-e-Millat Secretariat underpass on Khawaja Nazimuddin Road, sources maintained. The extortionists were taken into custody. They were later handed over to the Kohsar Police for investigation.
Police sources, on a query, told this correspondent that the gangsters hailing from tribal areas were embroiled in the organised crime, adding that the arrested persons have disclosed the identity of the remaining members of the racket who would soon be hunted down.
Police have arrested most of the members of the gang while teams have been sent to arrest the remaining members of the outfit, police sources concluded.
