KARACHI: PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Friday said the failure of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to take action against the PML-N and PTI candidates in NA-122 by-election for spending lavishly and excessively on their campaign would convert the whole process into a mockery of election exercise.
It may be recalled that PPP candidate Barrister Aamir Hassan has already complained to the ECP that his opponents - Ayaz Sadiq of PML-N and Aleem Khan of
PTI - have already spent more money on their campaign than the limit set by the commission.
The PPP chairman said his Party won’t allow such stark forms of rigging through use of ill-gotten money to influence the people through as it was the party which introduced one-person one-vote policy in the country. He said it was a responsibility of the ECP to not only halt the spending-spree by PML-N and PTI candidates but punish them under its code of conduct to discourage the trend and allow a level-playing field for all the contesting candidates.
Bilawal said Lahore was the birthplace of PPP and its candidate Barrister Aamir Hassan would come out with flying colours, if the ECP fulfilled the responsibility for holding free, fair and transparent election without the influence of money.
