Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman’s arrest: Journalists hunger strike camp continues
PESHAWAR: The workers of the Jang Group continued the hunger strike camp on the second consecutive day on Tuesday to protest the arrest of their Editor-in-Chief Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman.
They had set up the protest camp outside the offices of Daily Jang, The News and Geo in the provincial capital to demand the release of Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman. The protesters were carrying placards and banners inscribed with demands. They raised slogans to condemn the arrest of the Jang Group editor-in-chief. Khyber Union of Journalists (KhUJ) vice-president Malik Arshad Aziz likened the arrest of Mir Shakil to an attack on the press freedom. He said the government could not prevent the journalists from reporting the truth and the arrest was meant to gag the independent media. Malik Arshad Aziz said a free press was necessary for any democratic setup, therefore, the government must lift the curbs on the media and release Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman forthwith.
