The vice chancellor of the Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), Dr Shahid Siddiqui, on Monday visited the Karachi Central Jail to bridge the gap between inmates and the varsity.
He said education would be provided without any fee to the inmates to turn them productive members of society.
“Both the process of admission and acquisition of knowledge have been made easier and more than 50 inmates have expressed their desire to seek admission in the university,” he said. “Around 300 inmates are enrolled at the AIOU and passing the examination would reduce their time of punishment in the jail.”
He further mentioned that tutors of the AIOU would give lessons to the prisoners and books would be made available in the jail’s library.
Dr Shahid said that he had visited jails in Lahore, Rawalpindi and Quetta and he would also visit jails in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan to spread education.
