LAHORE
The Lahore High Court on Tuesday directed the Election Commission of Pakistan and the Punjab government to explain whether the court could interfere into the matter of delimitations after the schedules for local government elections had been issued.
A two-judge bench comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Shujaat Ali Khan heard the case and issued notices to the ECP and the Punjab government both for September 10. Arshad and other voters from different union councils had challenged the new delimitations. The petitioners stated that new delimitations had caused serious problems for voters as votes of a ward had been registered in another ward. The complexities have been created by the new delimitations which were also the violation of Section 10 of the Local Government Act, they contended.
They told the bench that the delimitation officer had also rejected their applications while a single bench of the LHC also rejected their petitions. To it, a law officer on behalf of the Punjab government told the bench that the new delimitations were in accordance with the law and were in the light of a Supreme Court order. However, the bench issued notices and asked law officers to assist the court on the matter.
