GUJRANWALA: At least seven people were killed and around 20 others injured after the roof of a factory caved in following a boiler explosion on Saturday.
According to police, the factory located in Ghakar Mandi caught fire after the explosion.
As several labourers were trapped under the debris, the rescue sources said, 15 of them had been retrieved. Efforts were being made to safely recover the remaining three, they added.
Four of the victims - including Amjad, Amanat and Amir - died on the spot, while three others succumbed to their wounds in the hospital.
Earlier, fire tenders and ambulances rushed to the spot to extinguish the fire and shift the dead and injured to a DHQ hospital; however, the doctors referred them to a Lahore hospital due to their critical condition as the DHQ Hospital burn unit was not functioning.
The police said they had arrested the factory owner. Others reports suggest that three administrative staff members were also detained.
Talking to newsmen, Gujranwala DCO Amir Jan said a probe had been initiated to ascertain the cause of the incident and a case would be registered against the responsible persons.
Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the tragic incident and sought a report from the quarters concerned, directing them to provide best possible medical facilities to the injured.
