ISLAMABAD: National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is yet to start action against some big fish involved in embezzling billions during the last few decades including some top businessmen, stock exchange brokers and top guns of the Musharraf regime.
Billions of rupees were extracted by numerous housing societies through fake and multiple sales of fake plots (non-existent) in connivance with the federal and provincial government officials and authorities like CDA.
In federal capital also some housing societies have sold out three to four million fake plots dodging accountability. Stock exchange frauds were reported and investigations were carried out and culprits were identified but no action was taken against them.
Not a single case of corruption during the Musharraf regime, now declared the most corrupt regime in recent years, is under NAB investigation despite the fact that all proofs regarding different corruption cases were either provided to the bureau or were collected by bureau’s own officials who were later snubbed and were asked to keep quite.
Stock exchange fraud, the biggest-ever financial fraud of Pakistan’s history, privatisation of Pakistan Steel Mills and the sugar scam are yet to be taken up.
National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials evade questions about the allotment of land to Musharaff’s favourite officials and to politicians though they admit that proofs are available but their hands are tied.
While all this is swept under the carpet NAB continues to arrest two or three clerks or patwaris or low ranking officers every second or third day. Recently some high profile politicians and officials were arrested but not by NAB.
National Accountability Bureau (NAB) spokesman Nawazish Ali Asim while talking to The News said NAB is taking action against the corrupt on a daily basis and is proceeding against every corrupt person according to the law, without considering one’s influence or position.
