More than education

In our society, it seems the moral aspects of child rearing and education are less emphasised. The result is that our behaviour has become more unpredictable vis-à-vis day-to-day problems. We have been hearing a constant call to investing more on education. What the proponents of this idea are ignoring is that though education is being spread in every nook and corner of the country, yet no distinctive improvement in the social or economic life of a common man can be discerned. Clearly, the kind of education we have has not yielded the desired results, leaving children less equipped to deal with the challenges of life.
In countries like Sri Lanka that have a relatively high literacy rate, we find an overall progress in the economic, social and political domains. Education in such countries matches the temperament and character of their inhabitants. In our education system, on the other hand, such learning is not included. However, education alone cannot turn the tables. Parents should also play an active role in shaping the lives of children.
