This refers to the news report, ‘Huge quantity of meat of dead horses, donkeys recovered in Lahore’ (August 26). According to the report, the police seized 40 maunds of meat of dead horses and donkeys from different shops in Lahore.
This not only shows the extent of moral collapse of our society but also the failure of the government in improving how people indulging in such shameful acts without fear. Recently the Punjab Food Authority earned a lot of praise across the country for exposing hotels and restaurants in the city for food hygiene standards. This also shows how easy it is for dangerous substances to enter the human food chain through unregulated meat. The authorities concerned should establish departments like the Punjab Food Authority in major cities of the country. Moreover, these departments should operate indiscriminately against such practices. People should also realise their responsibilities. No government can act alone. It needs the cooperation of society.
