ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehrik Insaf has decided to go slow in launching an all-out agitation against the ECP especially its four members who were reportedly involved in the electoral irregularities in last general elections.
Similarly the party also delayed filing of reference in the Supreme Judicial Council seeking sacking of ECP members to give more time to the legal experts engaged for preparing petition to make more comprehensive and effective.
According to insiders, party chairman Imran Khan has been well advised not to rush in controversy alone and he decided to call his deputy Shah Mehmud Qureshi to contact all other political parties and take them into confidence before moving SJC for taking action against the ECP and its members. These are signs of political maturity that seems to be coming into the party leadership.
Former secretary ECP Kunwar Dilshad has opined that the only tangible recourse that PTI has is to move SJC as under the 20th Amendment, they cannot be removed by any other means since they wouldn’t resign voluntarily.
He said other political parties including PPP had strongly opposed the proposal to enhance the member’s tenure by bringing in the 20th amendment to the constitution.
He said since the members have constitutional protection under Article 209, they cannot be removed by the government and only course for the PTI
is to either further amend constitution and their tenure be cut back to original period or the party should move SJC which is only authority to review the performance in light of the JC and ET reports and cut down their tenure by removing them.
