The sole suspect in the murder of Karachi University faculty member and journalist, Prof Dr Waheed-ur-Rehman, was acquitted on Monday for want of evidence.
The investigation officer concerned informed an anti-terrorism court that there was insufficient involvement regarding the involvement of accused Sami-ul-Zaman in the killing of Prof Waheed-ur-Rehman and hence it was unfair to keep him under detention.
Zaman was the only suspect arrested in connection with the professor’s murder.
The teacher had left his home situated in Block 16 of FB Area for Karachi University on the morning of April 29 this year when he shot dead by six gunmen riding motorcycles near the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases.
He was an eminent journalist and used to write columns for Urdu daily, Ummat, under the pen name Yasir Rizvi.
An earlier report by The News quotes SSP Central Noman Siddiqui as saying that the attackers wore masks and helmets and they first shot at the victim’s car to stop him, before one of them approached him and opened fire at point blank range.
The report submitted by the Investigation Officer to the trial court stated that neither more arrests had been made in the case nor had any witness come forward with a statement.
The court accepted the police report and acquitted Zaman who had been in police custody since June 14 under a 14-day physical remand.
MQM worker acquitted
Meanwhile, a worker of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Kashan, was also acquitted by the anti-terrorism court for want of evidence in a case pertaining to the possession of explosives.
Kashan had been arrested in 2014 from Landhi area an the police had claimed to have recovered explosives from his possession.
The court while concluding the case observed that neither there was any sound proof for the charge against Kashan of possessing explosive material. The court said that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges against Kashan and therefore issued orders for his release.
