LAHORE: At least 38 persons have lost their lives and around 102 sustained injuries in five suicide attacks in Punjab from February 17 to June 6 this year, while the death toll rose to 53 with the fresh killings in the Sunday’s terror strike with the number of injured reaching 125.
On February 17, at least eight people, including two policemen, were killed and 23 others were injured in a suicide attack on the police headquarters near the main gate of Police Lines in the Qilla Gujjar Singh area of Lahore.
On February 18, at least four Shias were killed and six others were injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up during evening prayers at the mosque in Qasr-e-Sakina Imambargah located on Kurri Road in New Shakrial, Rawalpindi.
On March 15, at least 15 persons, including 13 Christians and two policemen, were killed and more than 70 injured when two suicide bombers targeted two churches near Youhanabad neighbourhood in Lahore, sparking mob violence in which two other militants were killed.
On May 29, at least two people, including a police sub-inspector, were killed and three policemen injured, in a suicide attack near Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The blast took place when a day-night match between Pakistan and Zimbabwe was underway.
On June 6, two suspected suicide bombers were killed when their suicide vests exploded at Khayam Chowk on University Road in Sargodha.
The last gory incident in the chain of the terrorist attacks occurred on August 16 (Sunday), in which 15 persons, including provincial home minister Col (r) Shuja Khanzada, were killed in a suicide bomb blast at his native place in Attock which left over 23 critically injured.
