The Punjab government has decided to expand Elite Police Training School (EPTS) on modern lines at an estimated cost of Rs2 billion, The News has learnt.
The expansion of the EPTS is being made to enhance the housing and training capacity of the institution and Turkish police is providing assistance to the provincial government in elevating the training capacity of the school. The project will be completed in three years. Punjab Home Department has sent a summary to the chief minister for his approval.
In the summary, it is stated that the expansion plan of the EPTS has been made in the light of suggestion of the experts of Turkish National Police to upgrade the training as well as housing capacity of the institution. At present, the institution has the capacity to provide training and housing 1,200 officials/officers, and after the expansion its capacity will be increased to 2,400 persons. The plan also includes improving the training standards on modern lines and purchase of sophisticated weapons, transport and other modern equipment.
It has been demanded that Rs1.31 billion should be provided for the project during the current fiscal year which include Rs37.5 million allocated for 138 new posts, Rs966 million for civil works and Rs370.2 million for purchasing weapons, vehicles and other equipment, Rs324.2 million during fiscal year 2016-17 for purchase of weapons, vehicles and other equipment and Rs285.3 million during fiscal year 2017-18. The sources said the chief minister had already approved the EPTS expansion and the required funds would be released after the approval of the summary. They said the EPTS would provide training to Punjab police, Customs Department and Frontier Constabulary. The plan will also help in eliminating terrorism from the country, they added.
