A suspected gangster arrested by police for target killings and other crimes has disclosed during interrogation that politician Nabeel Gabol had funded his gang to ignite violence in Lyari, a police official said on Sunday.
At a press briefing, DIG South Jamil Ahmed said police had conducted a raid in Kalri, Lyari and after a shootout, arrested Amir alias Dhobi, a commander of the Ghaffar Zikri gang. However, his associates managed to escape.
During interrogation, Amir confessed to murdering Rasheed alias Tension of the Rehman Dakait gang and also kidnapping a trader belonging to the Ismaili community in Keamari. Amir and his associates had taken the trader to their hideout in Zikri Mohallah. They released him after collecting a ransom Rs5 million.
The DIG said Amir revealed that a few months ago, Ghaffar Zikri, the leader of his gang, had a conversation via internet with politician Nabeel Gabol. Gabol told Zikri to create a law and order situation in Lyari. Gabol also assured Zikri that he would be provided with weapons including Kalashnikovs, grenades, Awan rockets, light machine guns and money through a man named Rauf Nazim for this purpose.
However, Gabol, in a tweet, has refuted these allegations. He wrote that the provincial government would be unable to stop him from exposing its corruption by implicating him in such cases.
