LAHORE
The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has identified 106 illegally constructed properties mostly situated in commercial areas of the Walled City and sought approval from the Punjab government to demolish them.
Sources in WCLA said the authority carried out a survey to identify illegal buildings inside the Walled City. They said during the survey 106 properties were identified as illegal. They said the building control cell of WCLA recently compiled a report and submitted it to the chief minister secretariat.
Sources added some of these properties’ owners submitted maps for approval to the WCLA and the building control cell would assess the maps keeping in view the land use and neighbourhood in coming days. Sources claimed initial notices had been served to the owners of these properties and some FIRs had also been lodged.
Sources said the Walled City had a very huge vote bank of the present government and this was why the WCLA was reluctant to launch any strict drive in the area. The authority was already facing severe resentment from the traders’ community because during its last operation against illegal constructions in Shahalam Market, a traders’ leader died and WCLA officials were booked in a case.
As per the documents available with The News, the 106 buildings declared illegal by WCLA are A-2275 situated in Gujjer Gali Shahi Mohallah Inside Texali Gate, B-11 inside Main bazaar Shahalam, Lahore, B-1816 inside Said Mitha Bazaar, C-692 inside Said Mitha Bazaar, C-1671/70 (Fatima Centre opposite Ali Park inside Texali Gate, Lahore), C-1625 (Near Pani Wala Talab inside Texali Gate, Lahore), C-1666 (Near Ali Park Inside Texali Gate), D-1476 (Wachoo wali bazaar, Inside Shahalam, Lahore), D-2574 (Kocha Ghosia naya Bazaar, inside Lahori Gate, Lahore), D-2724 (Chowk Sootar Mandi inside Lahori Gate, Lahore), D-216/17 (Main Bazaar Mori Gate), D-1668 (Kucha Hari Parshad, Shahalam), D-1041 (Chowk Sooter Mandi, Inside Lahori Gate), E-337 (Dhall Mohallah Shahalam Market Lahore), E-432 (Near Ganda Nala Inside Mochi Gate), E -2035 (Mubasharra Garments Koocha Chah Tailian inside Shah Alam Gate), E- 657 (Dall Mohallah Inside Mochi Gate), E-109 (Dall Mohallah Inside Mochi Gate), E- 85 (Bahria Centre Inside Mochi Gate), E-521/547 (Paree Mahal inside Shah Alama Gate), E-2307 (Sohawala Chowk Rang Mehal Lahore), E-2344 (Mubasher Wali Gali Kucha Kutialan Masjid Shubher inside Mochi Gate, Lahore), E-2477 (Gali Nigaran, Soha Bazaar, Rang Mahal, Lahore), F-2599 (Near Fatima Jinnah Girls College. WCLA Director Planning and Conservation Najmus Saqib said: “We will soon be marking buildings on land use map to assess the present condition of the Walled City. We are surveying each and every property but it will take some time as there are almost 22,000 buildings inside the Walled City,” he maintained.
Riffat Pasha, Deputy Director Building Control, said the authority issued notices and FIRs had been lodged against the owners of illegal buildings. “We have a smooth system of approving maps and we believe in one-window operation. Property owners may bring their maps and we will assess them if the property is not harming the neighbourhood,” he said. He said: “We will take all steps to apply the WCLA Act and bylaws for building control”.
WCLA Director General Kamran Lashari while talking with The News said commercialisation was a disease which had spread inside the WCL during the past years. “We need to control it on war footing before it takes away the remaining heritage and glory of the Walled City,” he said, adding WCLA was trying its best to control illegal construction and limit land use for commercialisation.
