The city saw five men, including a bank manager and a policeman, fall prey to hit men and muggers on Monday despite a targeted operation going on for over 22 months.
The deaths came as a surprise to many in the metropolis where heinous crimes, including target killings, kidnappings for ransom and extortion, have decreased significantly due to action taken by paramilitary soldiers and police across the city.
Among the five victims was Sub Inspector Ali Rehman, who was shot dead in the Paposh Nagar police limits late on Monday night near Abdullah College Chowrangi, North Nazimabad.
He was going in his car towards North Nazimabad from his home in Manghopir when gunmen on a motorcycle shot him and fled. SI Rehman was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH), where he breathed his last.
The deceased had suffered a single bullet wound to his neck.
North Nazimabad’s Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Azam Khan said Rehman worked for the Sindh Reserve Police (SRP), Korangi Base.
He said the murder seemed a target killing, but the police were investigating to establish the exact motive.
