The Anti-Car Lifting Cell (ACLC) team gunned down a notorious car lifter and his partner in an early morning raid in the New Karachi Industrial Area (NKIA) on Wednesday.
Giving details of the incident, Senior Superintendent of Police Irfan Ali Bahadur, the in-charge of the cell, said that keeping in view the complaints being received regarding presence of infamous car lifters in the District Central a police picket had been erected in the area.
He added that in the wee hours on Wednesday an ACLC van during random checking in the NKIA saw some suspicious persons in a car. When they were signaled to stop the alleged criminals opened fire on the team ensuing into a gun battle.
After a brief encounter, the ACLC team arrested both the suspects in the car in injured condition and moved them to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries. The police recovered a stolen vehicle and two TT pistols from the possession of the accused.
After initial investigation the bodies were identified as of an infamous car lifter, Majeed Lashari, and his associate, Paryal. Both were wanted by the police in more than 50 cases of vehicle-lifting.
Lashari, presently an absconder, had been arrested many times but always got successful in getting bail from the court.
Five killed in accidents
At least five people were killed and two other people were injured in separate road accidents on Wednesday.
An unidentified girl who appeared to younger than 10 years was killed while her father, Muhammad Tayyab, was injured when a speeding van ran them over while they were travelling on a motorcycle on the Hub River Road situated within the remit of Baldia Town police station. Another man, 30-year-old Saleem was killed and his elder brother, 35-year-old Azeem, was injured when a trailer ran over their motorcycle near Gul Bai, within the remit of Shershah police station.
Meanwhile, an unidentified young man was run over near Al-Asif Square on the Super Highway within the remit of Sohrab Goth police station.
In yet another incident, an unidentified elderly man died when he was run over while crossing the road in Baghdadi area of Lyari. Another middle-aged man died after being run over by a train near the Drigh Road railway station.
