ARUNDEL: Surrey players Rory Burns and Moises Henriques were knocked unconscious and taken to hospital after a collision on the outfield during their T20 match against Sussex at Arundel.
Spectators in a crowd of 8,500 watched in horror as the two players crashed at speed while going for a catch.
Henriques suffered a suspected broken jaw after he was struck by his teammate’s knee.
Medical staff from both clubs were with the stricken players within moments of the incident and were soon joined by an off-duty doctor who had been watching the match.
Both needed oxygen treatment and three ambulances were called onto the pitch before they left the ground.
The pair were able to offer a thumbs-up to spectators before being taken to St Richards’ Hospital in Chichester for further treatment and assessment.
The Sussex physiotherapist John Marrale, who was one of the first people on the scene, said: “Both were unconscious after the collision. Henriques was caught by Burns’ knee and Burns had lacerations on the top of his head and below his eye.
“They were given oxygen and pain relief was administered by an intravenous drip before they went to hospital,” he said.
