Four alleged terrorists belonging to the banned Jamatul Ahrar and the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were killed in an encounter with police in Malir Cantonment on Saturday.
Senior Superintendent of Police Rao Anwar told The News that he along with his staff was going from his residence in Malir Cantonment to an office to do some official work at around 2pm when he caught sight of the four suspicious-looking men, two of them riding a motorcycle and the other two sitting in a car, near Check post No. 5.
He said the suspects opened fire as soon as he alerted security officials stationed on duty nearby to their presence. The police engaged the shooters in an encounter, injuring and arresting the two men in the car. The other two fled on the motorcycle.
The police gave a chase, which resulted in another exchange of fire with the suspects two kilometres from where they had first spotted them. After the exchange of fire, they arrested both men in an injured condition and moved all the four to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where they were pronounced dead.
SSP Anwar said the police seized a car, a motorcycle, four TT pistols, three ball bombs and bottle bombs from their possession.
The dead were named as Mehar Baadshah and Haider Ali, who belonged to the Jamatul Ahrar Group, and Qari Alamgir and Iqbal Mehsud of the TTP.
SSP Anwar said those killed were known terrorists and wanted by the Sindh police in a number of terrorism cases. He said Qari Alamgir was also involved in high-profile cases of kidnappings for ransom reported recently in the city.
In the past three weeks, he said, he had received three intelligence reports about a possible attack on him by the same group, for which it had trained three bombers. He said the four terrorists wanted to target him.
A hunt for the remaining terrorists of the group, including the bombers, is under way.
Two men killed
Rasheed Mashooq, 35, was shot dead in Janjar Goth, Sohrab Goth, on Saturday morning.
Police said the man was a resident of the same area and worked as a labourer at New Sabzi Mandi. He had left his home for work when a few yards away from his house unidentified gunmen shot and injured him before fleeing.
He was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The police said the murder appeared to be a target killing, but they were looking at other lines of inquiry.
In a separate incident, police found the body of a man hanging at a house in Machar Colony. They took the corpse to Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination.
The police identified him as Abdul Rehman, and said the murder seemed to have been committed over some enmity.
