Pollen season in capital, precautions advised
Islamabad: With high category of pollen count in Islamabad, health experts have floated the warning for the individuals with any sensitivity to these pollens that their condition may aggravate. This is the time when the on-going spring makes trees and plants pollinate and these pollen grains spread with strong gusty winds and remains suspended in the air causing severe pollen allergy.
One such sensitivity is a skin problem eczema whose signs and symptoms include tiny blisters that can ooze out, eventually producing crusted, thickened plaques of skin, It is always quite itchy.
Health experts warned eczema patients to take extra preventive measures to avoid medical complications in on-going pollen allergy season. While sharing some tips to avoid aggravation of the problem, a general physician Dr. Shazia Durrani said patients should avoid going outdoors on days of high pollen counts, on windy days and should remain vigilant to local pollen forecast, as provided by the Met Office as it can also help prevent further complications.
Regarding food which should and shouldn’t be taken during eczema, she said, avoid the foods which aggravate your allergy symptoms by carefully reading ingredients labelled on canned ones. Some common foods that may trigger an eczema flare-up and could be removed from diet as suggested by the doctor are: -Citrus fruits like oranges and their products including juices are strongly acidifying ones and a rich source of two itchy chemicals ,Salicylates and Amines. -Dairy products -Eggs -Some spices such as cloves and cinnamon etc.
According to a research people with eczema which typically affects the hands and feet should avoid beans, black tea and some other food items due to their nickel content. A bonus tip floated by Dr. Shazia for showering and bathing is to keep the water lukewarm as hot water can strip dry skin of essential oils.
It merits a mention here that people with weak immune system are prone to the attacks of allergy, so strong immune system is essential to keep the diseases at a bay. In order to boost the immune system, plenty of seasonal fruits and vegetables should be taken, advised Dr. Shazia. According to the doctor vitamin C, was not only good for immune system but also for circulatory system, maintenance of healthy energy system, for skin and eye diseases as well as for brain function.
