IGP orders action over torture of labourer in Gulshan-e-Maymar
In an unusual incident, a group of influential people severely tortured a labourer in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Maymar area on Saturday.
The dreadful incident occurred near Karim Shah Shrine within the jurisdiction of the Gulshan-e-Maymar police station.
The victim has been identified as Ghazi, who has worked as a scrap dealer. His wife claimed that some influential persons in the area, namely Daniyal, Rashid Nizami, Nawaz Pathan and Imtiaz, called him to sell some scrap materials and took him away with them to their office near a shrine in an area where they tortured them severely.
The victim’s wife said the suspects approached the Gulshan-e-Maymar police and registered a fake case of theft against him. She added that the suspects also threatened the victim’s family with dire consequences if they approached the police for registering a case.
The woman further alleged that Gulshan-e-Maymar SHO Ishtiaq Ghauri also manhandled her when she approached the police for the registration of a case against the suspects.
Police high-ups, including Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Syed Kaleem Imam and District Malir SSP Irfan Bahadur, have taken notice of the incident after a video of the torture went viral on social media. In the video, some men can be seen torturing the man.
The family appealed to Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and the IGP to take notice of the incident. According to Sindh police spokesperson, the IGP, taking notice of the severe torture of the labourer and the manhandling of his family by the Gulshan-e-Maymar SHO, sought a detailed report from the District Malir SSP.
A case has been registered against a suspect, Daniyal and two of his companions, on behalf of the victim’s wife on the directives of SSP Irfan Bahadur, who has also issued orders to arrest the suspects and initiate an inquiry.
