Police book former administrator Karachi for threatening on-duty cops

KARACHI: The city Police booked former administrator Karachi Fahim Zaman for threatening cops in the city’s Red Zone.

The incident happened on Tuesday when the police signalled a car to stop at the PIDC checkpost and sought identification papers. The car was carrying Fahim Zaman, the former administrator Karachi, who while arguing with the police tried to drive away, which led the police to pull their gun at him and an altercation followed. The police man in his complaint said that he had stopped the car at the PIDC check post along with six other policemen and asked driver to show the identity and the car papers. But Fahim Zaman forbade the drive and asked him to drive ahead, besides "arguing, abusing and threatening the policemen." A video of the entire altercation has also surfaced. Fahim was seen and heard admonishing the police. “Who are you to ask my identity? I have been the administrator of this city twice,” he could be heard in the video. “I will call Additional IG Karachi Amir Shaikh and complain to him.” On the other hand, Fahim Zaman in his video statement said his car was stopped by gun wielding policemen, demanding him to produce his ID card as he was entering ‘Red Zone’. Fahim said he told them that he had none as he had forgotten the wallet at home. He said when he insisted on going ahead a policeman pulled his SMG on me was itching to fire.

Fahim said they only backed off only after a heated argument. Fahim said he wondered "who has given police the authority to check the NICs in the Red Zone."

An FIR No. 31/19 under Sections 341, 353, 504, 506/34 was registered against Fahim Zaman at the Civil Line police station on behalf of police constable Adnan.

Meanwhile, the IGP Sindh Dr Syed Kaleem has sought a report from SSP South Pir Muhammad Shah about the incident.
