Independence anniversary of Tunisia commemorated

Islamabad : To commemorate the 63rd anniversary of Independence ‘for which Tunisians struggled for their freedom and dignity,’ the ambassador of Tunisia and Mrs. Adel Elarbi hosted a reception at the Serena Hotel.

The event was attended by senior diplomats and Pakistanis from different walks of life, while the guest of honour was Minister for Food Security and Research, Sahibzada Muhammad Mehboob Sultan. The cake cutting ceremony took place after the national anthems of both counties had been played

After welcoming his guests, the ambassador spoke of peace, democracy and coexistence adding that since independence, Tunisia has achieved remarkable accomplishments in several sectors, particularly in the health and education fields; given importance to women’s rights and gender equality within the Tunisian society; enhanced human rights; good governance; sustainable development and comprehensive security in all aspects of life.

“Bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries, Tunisia and Pakistan, which are deeply rooted in history, are strong and based on mutual understanding and solidarity,” he said. “We are endeavoring to promote this cooperation and partnership in all domains.”

He also informed that Tunisia is the Capital of Islamic Culture for 2019 and is hosting several internationally important events such as the 30th Arab League Summit. In 2020 Tunisia will host the XVIII summit of Francophonie. It is also is a candidate for a non permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the period 2020-202. During its mandate, Tunisia will play its role to defend the values of peace, stability, human rights and sustainable development in conformity with the Charter of the United Nations.

The minister said he was honored to be invited to the Independence Day celebrations of Tunisia, a country with which Pakistan has had long and lasting ties of goodwill and friendship. He also spoke of the good bilateral relations and concluded by wishing the government and people of Tunisia on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan.

Dinner was served with Tunisian and other specialties and lively music played in the background, which made the evening enjoyable, while guests exchanged views on different aspects of life in the capital – “never a dull moment!”
