A policeman, who was shot dead in an act of target killing late on Saturday night, was laid to rest on Sunday.

Jahangir Khan, 29-year-old police constable, son of Saleem Khan, was shot dead by unidentified suspects in the Hijrat Colony area. The deceased had been posted to the Civil Lines police station for intelligence duty.

“The deceased along with a head constable, Shahzad, was on intelligence duty before a combing operation when armed motorcyclists targeted them,” said DSP Fakharul Islam. “The armed assailants, however, escaped after Head Constable Shahzad retaliated.”

The officer added Jahangir was injured in the attack and was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medical treatment where he succumbed to his injuries. The police have registered an FIR No 27/19 under various sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act against unidentified suspects. According to police officials, drug peddlers could have been behind the incident and the police were trying to arrest the suspects.

The funeral prayers for Jahangir were offered on Sunday at the police headquarters in Garden. Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Syed Kaleem Imam, Additional IG Karachi Dr Amir Shaikh and other senior officers attended the prayers. Expressing his condolences with the family of the martyred cop, the IGP maintained that operations against the criminal elements would continue. He also announced compensation money and other facilities to the heirs of the martyred constable.
