However, the arrest of Mian Iftikhar Hussain, central general secretary of the Awami National Party (ANP), in the murder case of a worker of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) triggered widespread criticism. “A total of 197 people were arrested and 35 Kalashnikovs, 46 pistols and 10 rifles were recovered from them,” officials said on Sunday. According to the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN), a total of 81 incidents of violence were reported from 19 districts, indicating a highly tense political environment on the polling day.
“The incidents included clashes between supporters of contesting candidates, incidents of aerial firing, brawls among supporters of contesting parties and scuffles between voters and polling/security officials. Violent incidents were also reported from female polling stations,” the FAFEN report added.
