PBC wants suo motu powers restructured
LAHORE: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), top regulatory body of lawyers, Friday reiterated its resolution and demanded the Supreme Court restructure its suo motu powers under Article 184(3) of the Constitution to provide right of appeal to aggrieved party in such cases.
In its first meeting of year 2019 held here, the PBC executive committee demanded appropriate rules are framed for structuring powers under Article 184(3) giving right of appeal in suo motu cases.
PBC Vice-Chairman Amjad Shah presided over the meeting which was attended by chairman of its executive committee Idrees Sheikh, members Ahsan Bhoon, Azam Nazir Tarar, Kamran Murtaza and Yousaf Leghari.
The meeting urged the chief justice to form a larger bench of the Supreme Court with the representation of judges from all provinces to deal with the suo motu cases. It also called for more transparency in the proceedings of the Judicial Commission on appointment of judges in the superior judiciary. It recalled that the commission, seven years ago, had decided to constitute a special committee to frame its rules of business in order to ensure transparency of its functions and to save its prestige.
