As part of delimitation and ahead of local bodies (LG) polls, the district election commission has given Rawalpindi and Murree corporation status while doing away with towns system across the district.
Under the new arrangement, the Municipal Corporation Rawalpindi will have 46 union councils (UCs); the Municipal Corporation Murree will have 8 union councils while other tehsils will have the rest of the UCs out of the 120 union councils. The district council will consist of 146 seats.
District Election Commissioner Nadeem Zubair said that the delimitation of all union councils will be carried out in the light of the 1998 census from June 1 and the new delimitation will be publicised or advertised to seek suggestions for adjustment and modification.
He said that under the new delimitation plan, towns would be done away with and they will be replaced with the two corporations comprising 120 union councils. Of these union councils, Kotili Sattian will have 14 UCs, Kahuta 14 UCs, Kallar Syedan 23 UCs, Gujar Khan 19 UCs and Taxila will have 22 UCs.
Under the new arrangement, many areas will either be merged or separated after the delimitation process completes.
