‘Lahore: 101 Tales of a Fabled City’ and ‘Lahore Key Qisey’, two new books by Abdul Majid Sheikh on the city of Lahore, were launched with a great appreciation from the social elite and the intelligentsia of the country on Sunday.
The books, one in Urdu and the other in English, were launched in a ceremony held in a hotel in which a large number of writers, intellectuals, teachers, journalists and renowned social personalities of Lahore participated. Lahore Heritage Foundation Chairman Syed Babar Ali, the host of the ceremony, paid tributes to Abdul Sheikh Majid for his splendid work and said that he has done a fantastic work on this centuries old cultural heart of the sub-continent and had provided a great opportunity to explore this new Lahore through his books. Renowned Architect Nayyer Ali Dada pointed out that the city was not only known for its buildings, monuments and its history, but it was basically known for its dwellers and the folklore surrounding their living style. Mushtaq Sufi, a renowned intellectual, maintained that Lahore was not the name of streets and localities but it was a name of its people. He lauded this unique contribution by Abdul Majid for Lahore and added that usually we would know about the historic buildings and the kings and big personalities who commissioned them but we would not know about the real architects and makers of these great monuments. He pointed out that Majid Sheikh had told the stories of these real people of Lahore and in fact its and attempt to bring forward the peoples narrative. The writer of the books, Abdul Majid Sheikh in his brief address to the participants of the ceremony said that it was a labour of love and he had enjoyed it. Faqir Ijazuddin, Samina Rehman and others also spoke.
