Two MQM workers identified in Haqiqi man’s murder case

An anti-terrorism court on Thursday sent two workers of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on a judicial remand after being identified by two prosecution witnesses for killing an activist of the Mohajir Qaumi Movement-Haqiqi in 2008.
Saqlain Jaffery alias Tabish, a former KDA employee, and his accomplice Faraz Akhtar Zaidi alias Faraz facing several murder charges were arrested by the CID police after an alleged police encounter within the jurisdiction of the Surjani police station; another one of their companion Saqib Khan alias Mota was already under detention of the law enforcement agencies’ personnel. The two detained men were produced by Investigation Officer (IO) Iqbal Tanoli before the judicial magistrate (East-II) who conducted an identification parade.

PAC member jailed
An anti-terrorism court (ATC) awarded 35 years’ imprisonment to a member of the banned Peoples’ Amn Committee (PAC), Sarfraz alias Bhola, for possession of illegal weapons, explosive materials and kidnapping.
The convict also facing criminal charges over targeted killings of several policemen was arrested on October 28, 2011 after an encounter with the police, from the Dalmia area situated within the jurisdiction of the Aziz Bhatti police station.
The accused along with two other accomplices, Waqas alias Fauji and Mehmood Kala alias Chandio had kidnapped two boys, Ayaz and Sultan, demanding a ransom of Rs2 million. Police officials were informed about the kidnapping by an uncle of the abductees, following which they were successfully recovered in a raid conducted in collaboration with the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC).
The police claimed to have found Bhola in possession of a Klashnikov, 60 cartridges and one hand grenade at the time of his arrest. However, the remaining two accomplices managed to escape. The court awarded 21 years’ imprisonment for kidnapping for ransom and threatening and possession of illegal weapons whereas 14 years for possessing explosive materials; the period already spent in detention would also be included in the sentence.
