Rangers display weapons surrendered by public

A day after the Director-General Sindh Rangers Major-General Bilal Akbar issued a warning to all citizens of Karachi in possession of illegal weapons and licenses, officials of the paramilitary force displayed the arms surrendered by the public.
The DG Rangers has given a deadline till April 30 to everyone in possession of illegal arms. After the deadline all such people will charged under the anti-terrorism act for abetting militant activities.
According to the Rangers spokesman, citizens from different parts of the city forfeited illegal weapons at various installations.
The weapons include four M-16 rifles, five sub-machine guns, three light-machine guns and 13,600 rounds of different calibres.
The DG Rangers had observed that it had been observed in most cases of target killings and heinous crimes that the suspects and accused used illegal weapons and licenses for committing them. In the past, he had said, even a few arms dealers were issuing fake licenses as a cover for supplying and transporting illegal weapons.
It was said that possession of illegal arms or using fake license constituted offences under Section 23-1-A of Sindh Arms Ordinance 2013, the maximum punishment for which was 14 years rigorous imprisonment.
The DG Rangers had warned that individuals in possession of illegal weapons will be dealt as collaborators and associates of target killers and will be booked under the relevant laws.
He had urged the citizens of Karachi to submit illegal weapons by April 30. After this date, he had said, strict across-the-board action will be taken and individuals arrested will be dealt severely under the law.
