High Commissioner of India Dr T C A Raghavan called on Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmed at HEC Secretariat on Monday and discussed South Asian University (SAU) issues.
The diplomat also invited the HEC chief to attend the first-ever convocation of the SAU to be held on June 7, 2015.
The SAU is an international university established in New Delhi by the eight member nations of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The university started its operations from the academic year 2010.
The SAU now offers postgraduate and doctoral programmes in various disciplines, including developmental economics, computer science, biotechnology, mathematics, sociology, international relations and law, Raghavan told Mukhtar.
“It will ultimately have 11 postgraduate faculties and a faculty of undergraduate studies. The SAU attracts students from all the member nations and its degrees are recognised by all the eight SAARC countries.”
Meanwhile, issues pertaining to higher education sector and visa policy for Pakistani students aspiring for admissions to SAU were also discussed.
During the meeting, direct exchange of information between universities and research centres of both the countries was also deliberated upon, as well, as promotion of academic cooperation between the universities in Saarc states.
The HEC chairman told the high commissioner that Pakistan has ratified the agreement for establishment of South Asian University. Mukhtar Ahmed informed Raghavan that the HEC was organising 10th meeting of the heads of university grants commissions or equivalent bodies of Saarc from June 15-16, 2015 at Islamabad. Later, a shield was presented to Dr T C A Raghavan.
