BAHAWALPUR: A murder convict was hanged in the Central Jail here on Tuesday.
Lonay Khan of Mauza Talhar, Hasilpur tehsil, was hanged in the presence of a magistrate, a doctor and the jail officials. He was awarded death sentence for killing his brother-in-law in 2002.
On March 25, the district and sessions judge stayed the execution after receiving an application from Lonay Khan’s daughters that negotiations were under way for reconciliation with the deceased’s family. However, the negotiations failed. Two days ago, the district and sessions judge issued death warrants for the convict.
LABOURER KILLED: A labourer was killed and seven others were injured in a multiple pile-up on Hasilpur-Chishtian Road near Chak 47, Fateh, on Monday night.
A coach, a tractor-trolley, a motorcycle-rickshaw and two donkey-carts struck against each other. As a result, labourer Asghar was killed on the spot while seven others were injured. The injured people were shifted to the Chishtian THQ Hospital.
OATH-TAKING: Islamia University Bahawalpur Vice-Chancellor Dr Qaisar Mushtaq has said that the university will introduce online tracking system to solve the official matters so that faculty and management could avail correct and timely information with reference to correspondence and file work.
Addressing an oath-taking ceremony of the newly-elected office-bearers of the IUB Academic Staff Association here, he said that 12 demands presented by the ASA president would be treated according to the rules. He said that he would extend every possible effort to acquire land for a residential colony for teachers and additional houses would be constructed in the university staff colony.
Newly-elected ASA president Dr Javed Hassan Chandio, in his welcome address, said that those teachers who had completed their probation be regularised. He further demanded head of department allowance and other benefits for teachers of Rahimyar Khan and Bahawalnagar campuses.
