Five suspected al Qaeda terrorists were gunned down by Rangers in an early morning raid in Keamari on Wednesday. The paramilitary force seized a huge cache of weapons.
A Rangers spokesperson said the paramilitary force conducted an intelligence-driven raid at a hideout in Keamari. The terrorists fired gunshots at Ranger and the latter retaliated.
Five terrorists were injured in the shootout while their associates managed to escape.
The injured terrorists were taken to a hospital where they were pronounced dead.
The spokesperson identified the five men as Mohammed Umar alias Fahad alias Moon, the chief of the Ilyas Kashmiri group in Karachi; Anas Ahmad alias Saqib; Abdul Rauf alias Bilal; Javed Hassan alias Yasin; and Talha Qaisar alias Imran.
He added that these men were affiliated with al Qaeda and the Taliban. These terrorists were involved in a suicide attack on a Rangers sector commander in Korangi on February 14 last year. They had also carried out gun and grenade attacks on Rangers and police vans in Landhi and North Karachi.
They were responsible for many high-profile target killings, bank robberies and kidnappings for ransom.
The terrorists were planning to target the Expo Centre. Their plan was to hold the visitors inside hostage and then carry out suicide attacks.
Taliban killed
Four Taliban terrorists, including their commander, were killed in a shootout with police in Sohrab Goth on Wednesday.
SSP Malir Rao Anwaar said the police raided a Taliban hideout in the Ali Goth area of Sohrab Goth and in the ensuing shootout killed four terrorists and arrested eight others. A sub-machine gun and three pistols were seized.
One of the terrorists killed in the encounter was identified as Qari Zubair, a Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan commander from Shawal, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The official said Zubair was wanted for killing security personnel and carrying out bomb attacks.
A few months ago, Zubair had killed eight security forces personnel and hung their heads outside his house. He was injured in a drone strike in Waziristan and had escaped to Karachi. Presently, he was planning to carry out attacks in the city.
